Sustainable Wairarapa focuses specifically on reducing biodiversity loss and climate change mitigation activities within Wairarapa. All funds received as donations stay within Wairarapa.
Right now, Sustainable Wairarapa needs support with its biodiversity activities. Although this work is largely undertaken by volunteers, funding is required for equipment such as our AR5 bat monitors, and pitfall traps and transect lines (for surveys of small ground dwelling animals).
Any support is gratefully received, whether it is a one-off or ongoing donation; anonymous donation or donation whereby acknowledgement is requested.
Sustainable Wairarapa can provide a donation receipt for tax refund purposes.
Please contact Erica: info@sustainablewairarapa.org.nz for further detail.
Sustainable Wairarapa values your privacy and respects that all donations are a choice made carefully by the donor. Should you choose to donate, we will not contact you to make repeat donations unless you specifically request that we do.
Sustainable Wairarapa is currently raising funds to track pekapeka.
If you would like to make a donation to this cause, please go to: Tracking Pekapeka (long-tailed bats)!
To protect pekapeka (long-tailed bat) habitat, we first have to find them! Wellington One of only two native mammals in Aotearoa New Zealand, pekepeka (long-tailed bats) are endemic and critically endangered; largely due to habitat loss. The team at Sustainable Wairarapa is monitoring locations to determine the presence of these tiny mammals in remnant bush areas, on farms, along streams, and anywhere there is a potential sighting. An example of how their work contributes to conservation is that the team confirmed the presence of pekapeka at Lowes Bush. This work was referenced when the Environment Court placed a requirement on Harmony Energy's consent to put a solar farm on the adjoining land, that Harmony Energy survey for pekapeka prior to building, monitor pekapeka activity after installation of the solar farm, and have a mitigation plan if the bats are affected. Key to their success is having working AR5 bat monitors.
